The Soulful Sounds of Big Mama

Read Now

I recently discovered a South Korean music group called Big Mama and I have to say, I am completely blown away by their talent.

For those who may not be familiar with Big Mama, they are a quartet of female vocalists who formed in 2004. They are known for their powerful and soulful voices, as well as their ability to seamlessly blend various genres of music, including R&B, funk,  pop and ballads.

One of the things that sets Big Mama apart from other K-pop groups is their use of live instruments. While many contemporary pop groups rely heavily on electronic production and pre-recorded tracks, Big Mama opts for a more organic sound, featuring live guitar, bass, and drums in their performances. This, combined with their impressive vocal harmonies, creates a truly unique and dynamic sound.

I first stumbled upon Big Mama while scrolling through YouTube, and I was immediately drawn in by their voices. Their music was so moving and passionate that I couldn't help but keep listening. From there, I went down the rabbit hole and discovered more of their music, including original tracks like "Break Away" and "Don't Go Away." Each song showcases the group's incredible vocal range and ability to tell a story through their music.

The vocal group is made up of Park Min-hye, Shin Yuna, Lee Young-hyun, and Lee Ji-young. These woman recently released their 6th studio album, "Born," on February 10th. The album's title track, "Like Nothing Happened," depicts the emotions of someone who can't shake off the sadness of a breakup, even if they try to pretend everything is okay. The song features Park Min-hye's cool high notes, Lee Young-hyun's powerful vocals, Lee Ji-young's rich harmonies, and Shin Yuna's soft sensibility, creating an impressive and captivating melody. The lyrics express longing for a lost lover, with lines like "I think I love you enough to hate you/I'm only looking at you all day" and "I think you can live as if nothing's wrong/I think I'll die even if I pretend nothing."

This album marks Big Mama's first release in 12 years, since their 5th regular album, "5," which came out in 2010. The group, which was popular in the 2000s with hits like "Resignation" and "Yeon," disbanded after the release of "5." However, they recently signed with Kakao Entertainment and reunited with the original members, releasing the single "One More Day" last year and topping major music charts.

In addition to the title track, "Born" includes songs like "Starry Night," "Love Only Me," "Breath," "And you?", "The Joy of Living With Me," "Diary," "Star," "One More Day," "Thanks To.. (2022 Ver.)," and "Pretend nothing's wrong (Inst.)." Several of the tracks, including "And you?", "The Joy of Living With Me," "Diary," and "Star," are solo songs written and composed by Shin Yuna, Lee Ji-young, Lee Young-hyun, and Park Min-hye themselves, showcasing their individual personalities and musicality. Overall, this album showcases Big Mama's determination and confidence as they return as a complete group after nine years, ready to show off their accumulated musical talent.

It's not often that I come across a music group that really captures my attention and leaves me wanting more, but that's exactly what happened with Big Mama. I am now a huge fan and can't wait to see what they do next. If you're a fan of soulful vocals, powerful harmonies, and live instrumentation, I highly recommend giving Big Mama a listen. You won't be disappointed.
