Sunsets and Memories: Suchitoto

Read Now

I had the pleasure of visiting El Salvador in the beginning of 2021 and one of the highlights of my trip was a visit to the charming town of Suchitoto. It was a hot summer day and as we made our way there in a car driven by my friend's uncle, I couldn't help but take in all the beautiful sights of the countryside. The lush green hills, dotted with small farms and houses, were breathtaking. The road was winding, and as we climbed higher into the mountains, I caught glimpses of the vast Lake Suchitlán below. The lake sparkled in the sun, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and wonder as I looked out the window.

Once we arrived in Suchitoto, I was immediately struck by the colorful colonial-style buildings and cobblestone streets. The town was bustling with locals going about their day, and the sounds and smells were a mix of new and familiar. My friend's uncle took us on a tour of the town, pointing out the historical landmarks and giving me a glimpse into the local culture. He told me stories of the town's history and of the people who called Suchitoto home.

One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to a gorgeous restaurant that sat on a cliff overlooking the lake. As we walked in, I was greeted with a panoramic view of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with traditional textiles and intricate woodwork. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of warmth and comfort as I looked around.

I ordered the fish platter, and it did not disappoint. The fish was cooked to perfection, and the flavors of the herbs and spices used in the marinade were absolutely delicious. The platter came with a side of rice and beans, and a small salad. To drink, I tried Horchata, a traditional drink made from ground rice and cinnamon, and it was the best Horchata I have ever had in my life. The flavors were so unique and refreshing, I couldn't help but ask for another glass. I savored every bite and every sip, knowing that it was a taste that I would never forget. The taste of the mani, or peanut, is what made it so special. This would eventually lead to my addiction of mazapan, a Mexican sweet that is similar in taste, and the pacoquinha, of Brazilian origin.

The view from the restaurant was truly breathtaking and I couldn't help but take a few pictures to capture the memory of such a beautiful place. As we sat there, watching the sunset over the lake, I couldn't help but feel a sense of longing and reminiscence. Time goes by so fast, and I knew that this moment, this trip, would soon be a distant memory.

After our meal at the restaurant, we decided to take a walk around the town and explore the local shops and art galleries. The streets were lined with vendors selling handmade crafts and textiles, and the vibrant colors and patterns caught my eye. I couldn't resist buying a few souvenirs to take home with me. I wanted something to remind me of this special place, and the crafts were a perfect way to do that.

We also visited the local church, which was a beautiful colonial-style building with intricate carvings and stained-glass windows. The peaceful atmosphere inside was a stark contrast to the lively streets outside. We sat for a while in silence, taking in the beauty of the place. I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence and awe as I looked around. The church was a tangible connection to the past, and I felt a sense of connection to the people who had built and worshipped in this place.

As the afternoon turned into evening, we decided to head back to the restaurant to watch the sunset over the lake once again. The sky was painted in shades of orange and pink, and the reflection on the water was truly mesmerizing. We sat there for a while, sipping on cold drinks and chatting with my friend's uncle about our day, enjoying the tranquility of the place. The sun cast a warm glow over everything, and I felt a sense of contentment and peace.

As the sun disappeared below the horizon, signaling the end of a perfect day, I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia. The memories of my visit to Suchitoto will stay with me forever, a reminder of a special time and a special place. The beauty of the town, the delicious food and the friendly people all combined to make this one of the most memorable trips of my life. I will always cherish the time I spent in Suchitoto and I look forward to returning in the future.

As we drove back to our lodging, I couldn't help but think of how time goes by so quickly and how memories fade with time. I knew that the memories of this trip would eventually fade too, but I was grateful for the opportunity to have experienced such a wonderful place and to have made memories that will last a lifetime.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, trying to commit every detail of the day to memory. The smell of the trees, the taste of the Horchata, the sound of the water lapping against the shore, the feeling of the sun on my skin. I knew that these memories would stay with me, and I would look back on this trip with fondness for years to come.
